Esteban López is a Partner at Katz & Lopez, a leading multidisciplinary Panamanian law firm.
Mr. Lopez specializes in arbitration and has extensive experience in national, international commercial arbitration and in investment disputes before ICSID. He has acted as chair, co-arbitrator and counsel in international commercial arbitration under ICC, UNCITRAL Rules and in investment arbitration under ICSID and UNCITRAL.
He is a Founding Member President and Director of the Panama Chapter of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Panama), former member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration representing the Republic of Panama, member of the ICC Latin American Group of Arbitration, the ICC Commission on Arbitration (Panama. National Committee), Founding Member of the International Institute of Negotiation, Mediation and Arbitration, 2002. Member and former Vice President and director of the Panama National Bar Association, Member of the Arbitration, Commercial Law – Financial Services, and Banking Practices and Techniques Commissions of ICC Panama. He was designated by Panama to the Panels of Conciliators and of Arbitrators pursuant to Articles 12-16 of the ICSID Convention. Former Director representing Panama in EDECHI (Electricity Distribution Company). Member and Director of the Panama Chapter of the Spanish Arbitration Club, member of The Latin American Arbitration Association. Director of Banco Aliado, Aliado Insurance and Tagua Funds.
He has been recognized by CHAMBERS LATIN AMERICA 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 in Dispute Resolution (ARBITRATION) and in CHAMBERS Global. It has been recognized by THE INTERNATIONAL WHO’S WHO Central American Dispute Resolution.
He was awarded by the National Bar Association of Panama, in 2019 with the EDUARDO MORGAN medal in recognition of his extensive union, civic and professional career in commercial and arbitration matters, and in 2021 with the RICARDO J. ALFARO medal for his effort to benefit the administration of justice of the Panamanian state.
Mr. Lopez is an active member of diverse commercial organizations and charities foundation, destined to provide social support and assistance. Founding Member and President of the Panama Chapter of Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Education: Law and Political Science Degree from Santa María La Antigua University, Master’s degree in Law specializing in International Law, Commerce and Finance, with emphasis in Arbitration, at TULANE University.
